The checkered flag falls! And car number 74 wins the race with 27 laps complete, only 3/100 seconds ahead of car number 10. Car 14 finished 3rd with 26 laps but on lap 26 set the fastest time of the race with a 47.289 second lap.

How do we know all of this? We know it thanks to a group of dedicated people that volunteer in the specialty of Timing and Scoring or T&S as it's known as throughout the club. These folks work inside the T&S building which, usually, overlooks the Front straight and Start/Finish line. They are armed with stop watches and pencil and paper, the tools of choice.

time1.jpg (19156 bytes) Before the race, there is qualifying and each timer is assigned a car or two and marks down it's progress every lap as it crosses the the start line. At the end of each session the papers are collected and another dedicated soul inputs all of the information into computers and generates a starting grid based on performance.

During the race the procedure is repeated with one exception, people collect the paper as the race progresses and calculate the standings as they are happening. This gives us an on going flow of information about how all the cars entered are doing, how fast they are going, and where they may and do finish.
