At any given race weekend there will be between 100 and 250 race cars at the event. With them come tow vehicles, trailers, campers, crew vehicles, and various and sundry support rigs. Somebody has got to maintain control of this mass of machinery while in the paddock (the place where they are when they are not racing) and the pit (the place where they are when they are between racing and not racing).

Pit lane officials regulate the flow of traffic into and out of the pits, check racing cars when they report to the pits either for a mechanical problem or normal servicing, stand by with safety equipment, and protect the different crew members during the hectic time of pit stops. They are, in effect, the pit police.
